George Herman "Babe" Ruth is, without a doubt, the most popular baseball player ever. His 714 home runs was the major league record until 1974 when Hank Aaron broke the mark. He also had a .342 lifetime batting average, the 10th highest ever, and his .690 career slugging average and 1.164 career on base percentage are still MLB records. His spent his Yankee years mostly as a hitter and his .393 average in 1923 is still a Yankee record. He began his career as a pitcher with the Red Sox, compiling a a 94-46 record and a 2.28 career ERA. He was one of the first 5 inductees in the baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. He was known for his charisma and antics off the field as well as his slugging home runs on the field.
